People always have plenty to say about staying at Fingals ...

Our comments and reviews page will give you an idea of the experiences of our guests when staying at Fingals as well as anything the media have to say about us!

Relaxing and beautiful

It’s a unique and special place and where we could properly relax on our holiday. Had a lovely swim each morning and looked at the gorgeous gardens.

The Perfect Spot

The Wisteria Suite was a perfect spot for us (a couple and two adult friends). The rooms and bathrooms were comfortable and bright, the outdoor space overlooking the tennis green was just gorgeous, draped in Wisteria as one would expect!

We can't wait to return!

The Barberry Brook room was really stunning. It's a two story cottage located in the back of the property...as you approach it, it feels like maybe it's not going to be as lovely as the spaces you've walked passed to get to it...but just wait! It's right on a sweet babbling brook, and it's commodious and so so beautiful. The bedroom space is huge, with vaulted ceilings and a soaking bathtub from which you can look out at the brook and the greenery. The living area and kitchen are similarly comfortable and cozy, with everything you need to cook and to relax. We can't wait to return!

The Enchanting Folly

The Folly at Fingals in Devon’s South Hams is a charming and engaging holiday retreat that inspires on each visit. I thoroughly recommend this enchanting self catering cottage with balconies overlooking a brook and Fingals delightful gardens. Hosts; Richard and Sheila, are available as required but not intrusive. Everything you need for your stay is here. Much to do locally, but like me, you might find leaving the Folly, and Fingals, a wrench!

An amazing and magical place to stay!

We stayed at The Folly for 4 nights, it is an amazing and magical place to stay! We were made very welcome by Sheila and Richard who put so much effort into keeping Fingals so beautiful. The Folly had everything you could wish for on a break away, the underfloor heating in bathrooms, electric blankets on the bed, dishwasher, coffee machine and the views were something else.

Fingals is a rare gem

We thoroughly enjoyed our five day stay at Fingals, with our Grandaughter 17, who loved the gym and swimming pool/sauna, Richard and Sheila were such lovely hosts, wish we could have spoken more to them, but they were always very busy , as we were entranced with the whole experience of staying at the lower mill, and would love to have known more of the history. The Mill was very cosy and comfortable, everything one needed, was provided in both kitchen and a super large t.v. in a lovely large lounge, the bedrooms were luxurious, and we slept very soundly, items left for us to eat, and drink, and in bathroom too, for our use, as well as a washing machine/dryer. The gardens were enjoyable, with statues and fantastic quirky objects, Fingals is a rare gem.I can not imagine anyone not enjoying staying there, it is unique, and we hope to return one day, to stay in one of the other buildings, that are there.

Brilliant facilities, location and extra info for exploring

We had a wet and windy few days at Barberry Brook. The house is really well equipped and the open beams and having a bath next to the brook are particularly lovely.
Brilliant facilities, location and extra info for exploring. The surrounding area is v interesting and filled our days easily. The dogs enjoyed their stay, especially watching the brook from the balcony.

Lovely location if you want to be away from the world

Lovely location if you want to be away from the world but 15 mins away from shops.
Great walks and the fingals has all types.of games and books for all to enjoy.
Only disappointment was the self serve bar closed as the family were excited about that but other than that and being a little cold the place offers everything and the hosts are great.

Comfortable, cosy & relaxing

Comfortable, cosy & relaxing 4 nights tucked away in the pretty South Hams, yet close to Dartmouth, River Dart & the coast for walks, shopping, great places to eat & places to visit. Fingals is unique, a home from home with a touch of eccentricity. The heated indoor pool & games room is a bonus. This suite is ideal for a family, 2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults (like us) but would be a squeeze for 2 couples.

Fingals ... off the beaten path and eccentric - we loved it!

" Our last stop in England was such a treat...Fingals. Off the beaten path and eccentric- we loved it! As we drove in through the gate we felt like we had entered another world. The gardens are gorgeous and while we didn't get to play tennis, we loved seeing the grass court from the balcony. The Folly welcomed us with its quirkiness, and we kept discovering new things with every turn. We loved the comfortable bed downstairs set by the creek and were delighted by the large, handmade toilet seat! The kitchen made us feel right at home- it was stocked with everything we needed to cook our meals and lots of tea. The living room is a great space to hang out in to listen to records, the BBC, and just look out the window at the fabulous sky, hills, and flowers at the fabulous Fingals. We highly recommend for a memorable stay in Devon."

A Slice Of Heaven in Devon

A Slice Of Heaven in Devon
Ahh Fingals... how do we love thee? Let us count the ways... the friendly & hospitable Sheila & Richard ~ the unique design of each if the properties ~ the ultra comfy beds & quality bedding the artful objects in every nook & cranny, indoor and out ~ the pool, sauna, and pristine grass tennis court ~ the exquisite natural surroundings ~ the flora & fauna ~ the peace & quiet ~ the one-off 'quirkiness' which makes us feel we're somewhere TRULY special ~ the picturesque village of Dittisham, a short walk away ~ seriously, what's not to love?! My husband and I recently enjoyed our 16th visit to Fingals, we stayed in the Folly, which is as beautiful & romantic - and even more warm & cosy - as the first time we stayed there, many moons ago. The sound of the babbling brook, watching the wildlife whilst having coffee on our private deck, was so very special. As always... we didn't want to leave. And as always... we will be back! Thank you, Richard & Sheila, for sharing your slice of heaven with us.

Just excellent, home from home and lovely helpful hosts. Comfortable and perfect for self catering. Lovely grounds and tennis court and swimming pool and sauna… the list goes on … snooker, table tennis games galore, we even spotted a lovely little play house fully equipped. You may not want to leave the site to explore the area! It’s fun driving down lanes where the hedges touch both sides of the car! Thanks for the stay and hope to visit again.

Fingals is in a magical valley in a magical part of South West Devon

Fingals is in a magical valley in a magical part of South West Devon … and The Folly is a unique, quirky building, lovingly decorated, in a garden, by a stream, with a dishwasher and a nespresso machine (coffee provided)!   We loved it.  The first evening we went for one of the suggested walks up the valley: bluebells, bird song, wild flowers, stream and then up onto the downs, with views as far as Torquay.  Next morning a bullfinch watched us having breakfast.  Stretching exercises on the grass tennis court in front of The Folly, visited Agatha Christie’s house using the Dittisham passenger ferry … back for swimming … and sauna.  In the evenings Sheila recommended two superb restaurants.  Bliss for three days.

Just Stunning

I stayed at Barberry Brook, Fingals - just myself, a mid 30s female and my dog. I was looking for a relaxing, quiet, calm, slower paced week off and that’s exactly what I got. Barberry brook has the most beautiful bath with calming views over rolling hills, the comfiest bed and perfect set up for a relaxing break. The location couldn’t be faulted also. Nestled down winding country roads you really felt a sense of escape from the city. The owners were on hand for any questions and recommendations for where to explore, they also have a lovely detailed book without which I wouldn’t have come across the most beautiful beaches and costal walks. It was just heaven and exactly what the doctor ordered.  Thank you for bringing this beautiful property to my attention, and to top it off I think my dog had a better holiday than me splashing around in the crystal clear rivers, dog friendly beaches and endless coastal walks. Just stunning.

This is a very special little place nestled in the hills. It's an extremely tranquil spot to completely switch off from the outside world. Just a little bit in love with this quirky, amusing and comfortable place!

We're delighted to be back at the Folly after a 16 year hiatus (although it's the 6th visit to Fingals, spanning 25 odd years).  Just a little bit in love with this quirky, amusing and comfortable place ... absolutely LOVE the self-catering, which wasn't available in previous visits, and of course, the bath tub!   We will be back ... hopefully sooner rather than later this time.

A real gem of a stay!

Thank you Richard and Sheila for a delightful stay.  We were warm and comfortable for our December visit to Barberry Brook.  The house itself is a delight in every sense and a joy to be ensconced there.  There are also so many delightful walks in the area and places to explore. The convenience of ordering a prepared dinner dish was very welcome too, as was the sauna and swimming pool……….an all round delight!

Barberry Brook is situated at the heart of a captivating part of Devon - wonderful explorations for the South west coastal path walks easily accessed and the lovely towns of Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge nearby.  A real gem of a stay.

A Fantastic Find

My Wife and I have just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay at Fingals. We stayed in Barberry Brook which is the most tranquil setting you could wish to have. The only noise you hear is the babbling of the brook and the occasional owl at night. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and extremely well appointed. The whole place is very quirky and may not suit everyone, but we loved it. The owners Sheila and Richard were very friendly and were there if needed, but not in your way at all. We are looking forward to returning in the not too distant future. A wonderful place in a beautiful setting.

Beautiful self-catering accommodation in a beautiful location

We arrived late because we had engine trouble and the owners very kindly put on the heating and left the key in the door for us. The Folly was a self-catering little house for two people which was delightful. The owners left some drinks, chutney and marmalade for us as well as fresh water in the fridge. It was immaculately clean and we did not want for any equipment. The wood burner was made up for us and toiletries provide in the bathroom and shower. The pool is small but has a contraflow which allows for exercise and we went to sleep with the sound of the stream behind the property which was lovely. In the summer there is a little bench and small platform through the bedroom where one can sit in the sun. We had a dog with us and she was very welcome. We walked to Dittisham village and had a drink and on the second day we drove to the village and took the ferry to Dartmouth. A lovely break.

25 memories of 25 years of Fingals

25 Fingals memories for my 25th Fingals anniversary.

1.  Anticipation. Fields turning red, Totnes, winding lanes, first sight of the Dart, and then the green Fingals sign. Really, I still count down the days!
2.  First visit; first evening meal. Deb announced we could join the main table. Me; 'Not sure about that' How wrong was I!
3.  Bathed in sunshine on the step outside Lower Mill toward late afternoon and listening to the chatter, clinking, and clanking of pans from the kitchen. Dinner beckons…..
4.  Little heard now but the shrill ring of the telephone. Maybe a booking; 'who is the lucky one?' I used to wonder.
5.  Thoughtful, whimsical, and uncontrived Fingals factor as I call it. Very, very special. Me to a tee. Love it.
6.  Eric. Many memories of course but watching him pace the pool reciting the menu to an elderly, and most reluctant, swimmer was very amusing.
7.  My first morning, early and sunny, watching Emma's faltering steps on the croquet lawn. Richard's mother and I shared a pot of coffee.
8.  Menu cards. Girls would collect and then return with our selections. Bar snacks may have induced their endeavours.
9.  Honesty bar. We all loved this, can also say that it was never abused. I've kept the bar tabs.
10.  Looking in on the main dining room with table laid for dinner. Shining cutlery, gleaming glass, candles lit. I love a properly laid table.
11.  Tennis matches. Particularly your friend with the brown working cocker. He would (maybe still does?) swat the ball, immobile, from mid-court.
12.  When girls became old enough to dress for and enjoy dinner. Took them ages........then drinks in the bar. How grown up.
13.  Dennis the Menace video in The Barn. 'Tewebbly sowwy' when Dennis's dad lost his false teeth. Now an apologetic idiom for our family.
14.  The restaurant. We loved the food, unpretentious but stylish. Eric’s Gallic flair added to a real occasion. And later……
15.  …..singsong recital of sweet menu; chocolate torte, creme brulee, lemon tart....we always asked for a repeat. Torte, Brulee, Tart!
16.  Lolling on the lawn watching, with interest, first-time guests arrive - will they enjoy? Of course, most did - and returned.
17.  Simultaneous sense of involvement and detachment in the Folly. The perfect mix for an old misanthrope like me.
18.  The two owls in the bar; 'Let's go back to Fingals for a toot'. Love this. Nail it to the wall, I have my eyes on it.
19.  Each year the same ethereal atmosphere, but always changing little by little. I love spotting the differences each year.
20.  The Fig tree at rear of tennis court. Delicious fruits hiding behind the large leaves. Roasted, a welcome harbinger of autumn.
21.  Folly balcony over Barberry Brook. How much time have I spent there? Each moment a real pleasure.
22.  Sun setting behind hill at rear of the Folly, Radio 4 an accompaniment to my evening cooking, external hotel lights coming on, all perfectly bucolic.
23.  Opening the Folly door on arrival, lavender scent in the hall, stream burbling, a whole week in prospect.

24.  The loo in the Folly which sounds like Concorde on take-off. Puerile, but I must flush it on arrival to ensure it remains unchanged.
25.  The impromptu barbecue a few years ago eaten on the terrace to side of the house. Reminded me so much of pre-dinner drinks outside the bar years before.

If you pass near Dittisham

If you pass near Dittisham
Be sure to stop a while
And try your luck at Fingals -
It’s sure to raise a smile .

The hosts are full of bonhomie
The setting so bijou
On beds befitting of a Queen
You’ll sleep the whole night through.

Then wake up to a breakfast -
Bespoke and cooked with care
Followed by a garden roam -
‘Mid blooms a bursting there .

And should by chance you take a swim
Backstroke will do the trick
From there you’ll see the painted nymphs
Surrounding Sheila’s dick .

Be sure to stop at Fingals
It’s five star - please believe -
You’ can check out any time you like -
But you still won’t want to leave .

What a comfortable holiday home!

What a comfortable holiday home - great to be welcomed by fresh flowers and a welcome basket of local goodies.  Interesting eclectic art and outdoors wonderful modern sculpture.  Best of all two lurchers for our lurcher to run with!

A week is never enough!

The Wisteria Suite had everything to suit our needs and catch up on sleep!

Lovely stay for 3 adults and small toddler to relax, recover from jet lag, and spend time together in a tranquil environment. Enjoyed the very pretty garden and the serenity of the location, in an almost hidden valley. Wisteria Suite had everything to suit our needs and catch up on sleep. Swim in pool was refreshing. Hosts were very helpful &  organised sleeping accommodation before we arrived, helped organise taxi into Dartmouth so we could have a car-free day, and sent on a forgotten item, very much appreciated break.

It really is the best place to unwind!

We have just returned from a thoroughly relaxing stay in the Lower Mill. The property was homely with everything to hand.  We enjoyed the tennis swimming and snooker but best of all the hospitality of two wonderful hosts Richard and Sheila.

We have been regulars at Fingals for sometime and the warm welcome we  always receive from Richard and Sheila is something we really value we feel like old friends rather than guests.  It really is the best place to unwind!

Wonderful restful retreat

Marco and I really loved our stay at Fingals, it was the wonderful restful retreat we were hoping for. The Folly where we stayed was utterly charming, and we have been recommending it to friends ever since. We will definitely be returning in future when we look forward to creating more special memories.

This hideaway is perfect

“This hideaway is perfect for a romantic mini break - beautiful space and the surrounding countryside is gorgeous! We loved the little welcome hamper and toiletries we received on arrival. Sheila and Richard were very responsive before and during our stay, and we really enjoyed our trip.”

Stunning situation even in the rain!

Our second stay with you at Fingals.  Stunning situation even in the rain!  The charm of Fingals is a rare and wonderful thing in todays world of bland hospitality.

The perfect place to stay in the perfect location.

The perfect place to stay in the perfect location.

Fingals is ideal for switching off and relaxing (pool, tennis, games room, walks), for coastal and moor hiking, for beaches, boat trips, and for exploring Dartmouth, Totnes, and the many villages between.

Richard and Sheila are gracious hosts, helpful and thoughtful.

We stayed at the Lower Mill (summer 2020) and the Upper Mill (spring 2021). Both apartments are comfortable and spacious and ideal for a family (with dog). While there's plenty to do on the grounds and environs, the apartments themselves are very private, with private outdoor space for dining, reading, and general peace. All this AND, nearby fabulous restaurants and gastro pubs.

Next time we return we're thinking of experiencing the autumn. Whatever the season or the reason, Fingals is the perfect destination in the heart of beautiful southern Devon.

What a fabulous place!

So perfectly formed and comfortable. Epic bed, shower & bath. The pool was crystal clear, warm & scented with jasmine flowers... the perfect place to retreat to.

A very peaceful place, utterly beautiful gardens and surroundings. We loved being here with out two girls who adored the pool and the dogs. I cannot recommend this place enough.

We loved returning to Fingals. It's the kind of spot you arrive at, and immediately begin to relax. Do not come to stay at Fingals if you are looking for a sterile, all-boxes-ticked very standard situation, that's not what you get here.

The Barrats

Fantastic location for an escape whilst still having good broadband access (as you can never escape quite as much as you should). Excellent quality grass tennis court and beautiful gardens.

We have, like so many others before us, fallen in love with beautiful Fingals. This place is full of soul and you'd have to be mad not to love it.

The portmanteau 'chillax' must have originated here. It feels like you've been invited into someone's home and have been left to explore all the hidden nooks and crannies. Loved the authenticity of the old rugs and the creaky stairs.

There's no doubt that a week at this wonderful place is equal to at least a fortnight in virtual time. The ethos of this little spot of paradise is spot on! It's perfect here!

A wonderful stay! Thanks so much for opening your home. The Folly brought smiles on a daily basis as one found it 'winking' at us always. The ducks were an added bonus!
